The Making of Moon Phases

The idea came to me when I was reading about the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and walking on the moon. I wanted to make a quilt that illustrated our fascination with the moon and the night sky.

I drafted English Paper Piecing patterns to create the moon phases and assembled those first. Next, I appliqued the moons to the background fabrics. Once the hand piecing was complete I used a variation on a log cabin block to piece the surrounding backgrounds. The three accent bars represent the sunset, the milky way, and the northern lights. I finished the quilt with big stitch hand quilting and facing.
