I set out to make an infinity scarf and I thought through every step of the process. I wrote down all my pattern notes and I sewed all my pieces. I was ready to assemble my scarf and it seemed like a couple quick, simple seams and I’d be done. Boy, was I wrong! After TWO failed attempts and a decision to preserve my pieced fabric (double gauze can only be unstitched so many times), I turned to some small scraps to figure out the mystery of the infinity scarf.
If you simply make 2 infinity loops and then sew them right sides together you’ll be left scratching your head like I was. You do not end up with a scarf, but instead a strange long tube that maybe a giant with a super long neck could wear as a buff/neck gaiter. The trick is in the turning and the order you sew your seams.
First, you need to place your front and lining right sides together. Sew one long side from end to end. Press seam open.
Next, sew the second long side, leaving the short ends open. This is where the tricky parts comes in. Reach through the tube you created and pull the other open end inside the tube until it starts to come out the other side. Do not turn all the way right side out.
Align the side seams and top raw edges. Use pins or clips to hold in place. Sew together leaving about 8″ open for turning.
Now you can use the opening to turn your entire scarf right side out. Pin the opening and hand stitch closed with a ladder stitch.
Ta-da! The mystery isn’t so mysterious after all, is it? I’m still perplexed as to why my first attempts failed but my brain is too tired to think it through anymore. Now that I have a successful infinity scarf, I hope you’ll be able to learn from my trial and error so that you aren’t figuring it out on your own.

Laura, This looks nice and now with your directions, I think I will attempt a scarf. What kind of fabric do you use for the lining? The gray piece looks soft like a knit?
Happy Birthday Laura! Your scarves are beautiful – thanks for the pattern download.
[…] The pattern includes instructions for both oversized scarf versions, the plus block wrap-around and the flying geese infinity. It took a lot of brainwork to figure out that lined infinity scarf. Or maybe I’ve lost my marbles since we are now on month 9 of quarantine! And so you don’t have to figure all that out on your own, not only are there instructions in the pattern, but I’ve written a photo tutorial and posted a detailed video that you can find HERE. […]
