Here it is hanging at QuiltCon last February. It hung in Improvisation and is titled Project 8. It was fun to see it in the show. I know there’s only a couple weeks left until this years submission deadline and I might only enter one thing and keep my fingers crossed that it will get in. We’ll see if I get around to entering. I may also decide to take a year off and just enjoy looking at all the other inspiring work in the show when I go to Phoenix next February.

I’ve been pretty quiet in my little corner of the gram for awhile now.

We’ve got a new routine in our house. Middle school has a lot of homework. I’m working more hours at a slightly different job at my school. Kids get older and have more activities.

But I’m really excited to tell you soon about this big secret project I’ve been scheming for the past couple years 😉

I’m still here slowly finalizing a big project and starting to sew again. I put my diamonds quilt back on the design wall the other day and have it about 1/3 pieced together. Focusing on enjoying the process right now.

On Sunday I took a Lino printing class. I finally got around to getting these little mice posted here.

They sure aren’t perfect and I can’t even say I love them, but I did learn a new process and I have ideas of how to make it better. And just because I don’t have enough hobbies for my lack of spare time, I’ll be adding Lino printing to the list now.

It’s the last day of spring break around here. T

It’s the last day of spring break around here. That means tomorrow will be back to harsh reality.

I’m so glad I made a goal to sew every day and play with fabric and color. I made this fun block and promptly went to my scraps to make another version.

If you’ve ever been in a creative funk, I can’t recommend enough just making random pieces and blocks every day for a week. You don’t even need to spend much time doing it. There were days that were mostly computer work and I carved out a couple 20 minute chunks of time to sew something.

*NOT MY WORK*
I find myself drawn to quilts made by others for many reasons. I like quilts that have creative use of fabrics, colors, and textures. But I also find that there’s always more minimalist quilts that catch my eye. This is a style that I only dabble in so it tends to be opposite of what I make. Don’t get me wrong, I will always love a good maximalist design.

Art is subjective. It’s okay if you don’t love every quilt you ever see. It’s okay if what you like to look at and find inspiration from differs greatly from what you like to make. It’s okay if you see something you don’t like (as long as you are kind and thoughtful if sharing your opinion). It’s okay to have preferences.

I like looking at all the quilts I share. I hope you get something out of me sharing too.

Made progress on this yesterday. We’re on spring break this week and I’ve been trying to get in the sewing room every day. It’s been really nice. I forgot how relaxing it is to just putter around the sewing room and work on random things.

So much to share from QuiltCon still.

Snip-bits from my brain:

It feels like it is supposed to be obsolete at this point. But honestly, I got home from NC just 23 days ago.

A struggle I have with social media is that everything feels like it should be fast paced and fresh. Took 6 months to make a quilt? Better compress it into a 30 second video clip. Don’t quilt every day? You are no longer relevant.

Coming back into trying to share my creativity on a more regular basis, I’m trying to find the right balance for me without too much of my own mental pushback about the digital world we live that demands so much of our energy.

All that to say, I’m still sharing things from less than a month ago. And that’s just how it’s gunna be. 🙂

We had an extra long weekend because of 20” of s

We had an extra long weekend because of 20” of snow causing 2 snow days last week. I spent a tiny bit of my time in the sewing room and decided to sort my scraps.

I have a scrap collection bucket next to my cutting table that I dump scraps into. Then when that is overflowing I sort them into these nice clear bins on the shelf.

Scraps for me look like anything that can’t be neatly folded into my fabric storage bins down to 2” bits. I do not precut any sort of sizes because for improv work I grab what I have and make it work.

These bins are pretty full and I’ll focus on incorporating them into projects in the near future.

Here are the goodies I came home with from QuiltCon. I don’t spend a ton of time in the vendor area so that I can avoid splurging on unnecessary [for me] things. I did manage to snag a hera from @modern_american_vintage and I came home with some fun stickers that I swapped for.

I’m still slowly digesting all the quilts I photographed. I like to evaluate what drew me to look at a certain quilt and why I felt compelled to snap a photo. Some things, but not all, that stand out to me are:
-bright + colorful
-graphic design and precision
-opposite style from my own
-creative use of fabric
