I knew this was a pattern that many people were looking forward to. When I shared my process making the original improv Finger Paints quilt, it received so many positive responses. The challenge was to convert a ruler free improv quilt with over 80 fabrics into a pattern that was not too complicated to follow.
First, I narrowed down the fabric selection to just 31 colors. This allowed me to create a color map for each block of the quilt. The pattern also includes places to keep your fabric selections organized. The next thing I did was determine a standard, and ruler cut, size for each unit within the blocks. By translating my original improv quilt this way, makers of the pattern can achieve a similar painterly color placement look to their own quilt made from the pattern.
Overall I am happy and excited that there will be more bright and colorful bear paw quilts in the world!
